Conditions treated

Acupuncture can be a part of the treatment plan for nearly any condition. In some cases it can serve as the primary or the sole treatment, while in other cases it complements other treatments. It would be inappropriate, for instance, to treat cancer with acupuncture, but acupuncture can be useful for supportive care of cancer patients or management of the side effects of cancer treatments. Anxiety, insomnia, and pain are examples of conditions that may be successfully managed with acupuncture alone.

Acupuncture is used to good effect in the treatment of pain of all types, various mood disorders, PTSD, respiratory, digestive, gynecologic, urinary, and neurologic problems, as well as problems with attention, focus, and concentration. It would be impossible to provide an exhaustive list of problems treated; I am happy to discuss specific cases.

Acupuncture is particularly useful for complaints that do not fall neatly into diseases and disorders as defined by Western medicine. I have seen many patients over the years who do not feel “right” but who have struggled to find effective Western treatments (or, in some cases, diagnoses). Eastern medicine defines problems differently and treatment does not depend on fitting a defined disease state. In Eastern medicine it is preferable, in fact, to treat before there is “disease” as we would define it in the West. Acupuncture helps the body and mind re-balance and heal themselves, and if this can be done before things have gotten too far out of balance, all the better.
